How to Replace a Steering Rack

Replacing a steering rack is one of the most difficult of the do-it-yourself car repair jobs. Before you begin, read the instructions completely and make sure that everything what you need. Also keep in mind that these are generalized statements, and is not specific to your vehicle. Some steps must be done somewhat differently. It is recommended that you read the manual first factory. Finally, you will need somebody to help you with the project.

They areneed a screwdriver, a ratchet and socket set with extensions, wrenches, a hammer, pliers, a wire brush, power steering filter, power steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid, a tie rod separator, a jack, jack stands, possibly an engine mount bracket and of course the new power rack.

First, loosen the wheel nuts and jack up the front of the car. Then, take the two front wheels. Start with the wheel rotated forward, and turnslowly until you get a socket with the steering shaft joint bolt. After you made the screw, use the screwdriver to open up the universal joint upwards. This ensures that you can move the spline bracket. Do not remove the spline bracket yet. Remove the screws bolts under the front plastic cup, then you do. Next, unbolt the tie rod bolt on the hubs on both sides. Remove the tie rod separator; Push them on both sides. First Solve the tie rod lock pins, then the tie rod ball joint. Removethe rubber boots and loosen the ball joint. Bars, the hydraulic feed and return line and remove the rack mounting screws.
